Architecture of Perception – Designing the Invisible
私たちは物を見る前に、
すでに何かを受け取っている。
Before we see an object,
we have already received something of it.
建築を学び始めた頃、
私は空間を「形」で理解しようとしていた。
だが年月の中で、
形の手前にある知覚そのものが、
空間の核を先に形づくっているのではないか──
そう感じるようになった。
When I first studied architecture,
I believed space was understood through form.
But as years passed,
I sensed that perception itself,
even before form emerges,
begins shaping the core of space.
見えるものではなく、
見えないものが空間を満たしている。
The visible does not make space.
The invisible fills its interior.
古建築を歩くと、
その奥に「陰の深度」が息づいているのを感じる。
桂離宮の書院で、
光が射す直前に漂う静かな層。
大仙院の石庭で、
陰が奥へ沈み込みつづける深さ。
唐招提寺の軒下で、
わずかな湿度と温度が闇を支えている気配。
それらはすべて、
形の背後にある
見えない設計を知覚した瞬間だった。
When I walk through ancient architecture,
I feel what I call
the depth of shadow.
In the study rooms of Katsura Rikyu,
a still layer before light enters.
In the garden of Daisenin,
shadows sinking steadily into depth.
Under the eaves of Toshodaiji,
humidity and temperature supporting darkness.
These moments reveal
a design behind form—
a structure perceived rather than seen.
VR制作の現場でも、
この「陰の深度」は現れる。
かつて存在した柱の影が、
復元された空間の中で再び実体を帯びる時。
風の温度や空気の厚みが、
見えない層として浮かび上がる瞬間。
知覚は形の不在を補うのではなく、
形の奥に沈む「内部の陰影」を
あらためて組み上げている。
In VR production,
this depth of shadow appears again.
The shadow of a vanished pillar
feels tangible within a reconstructed scene.
The temperature of wind
and the density of air
emerge as invisible layers.
Perception does not compensate for absence.
It reconstructs the internal shading
that lies beneath form.
空間とは、
見えないものの総和である。
Space is the sum
of what cannot be seen.
AIと共に働く日々、
私は知覚がどれほど個的で、
どれほど創造的な行為かを
あらためて感じている。
AIは形を示す。
だが、その形がどの深度を持ち、
どれほどの余白や陰をまとうかは、
人間の知覚が決めている。
Working with AI,
I have rediscovered
how personal and creative
perception truly is.
AI proposes form.
But the depth, margin,
and shadows around that form
are shaped by our perception.
知覚とは、
見えているものの奥に潜む
まだ言葉にならない構造を拾い上げる行為である。
建築が柱と梁で空間を支えるように、
知覚は空間の意味を支えている。
光が差す前の予兆、
陰が沈む深さ。
それらの「影の層」が、
空間の内部を完成させる。
Perception is the act
of sensing a structure
that has not yet become language.
Just as columns and beams support a room,
perception supports spatial meaning.
The anticipation before light enters,
the depth into which shadow sinks—
these layers of shadow
complete the interior of space.
見えないものを設計する。
それが、知覚の建築である。
To design the invisible.
That is the architecture of perception.
