Space as Sign – The Semantics of Surface
空間は物質ではなく、
意味としてまず現れる。
Space arises first as meaning,
not as material.
建築も、CGも、VRも、
私たちが「空間」と呼ぶものは
実は「表層」の重なりによって成立している。
しかしその表層は、
単なる材質や色彩の問題ではない。
そこには文化、記憶、身体、時間──
そして読み取られるべき意味が
静かに沈んでいる。
In architecture, CG, and VR,
what we call space
is created by layered surfaces.
Yet these surfaces are not defined
by material or color alone.
Within them lie culture, memory, the body, time,
and meanings quietly resting beneath.
空間はまず「記号」として働く。
表層は世界を覆う皮膜ではなく、
世界が人に触れるための
最初の言語なのである。
Space functions as sign before it becomes matter.
A surface is not a membrane covering the world,
but the first language
through which the world touches us.
私は制作のなかで、
何度も表層と向き合ってきた。
質感、反射、深度、透明度、
光に触れた瞬間に生まれるわずかな揺らぎ。
その揺らぎが空間に意味を与えていく。
In my work,
I have faced surfaces again and again.
Texture, reflection, depth, transparency,
and the slight tremor born
at the moment light touches them.
This tremor gives meaning to space.
表層は、空間が最初に語り始める場所である。
The surface is the place
where space begins to speak.
銀閣寺の東求堂では、
畳と柱の配置が
歩く速度と視線の高さを決めていた。
龍安寺の石庭では、
石の間隔が
時間をどのように読むべきかを示していた。
これらは建築の美ではなく、
空間が人に向ける「読み方の記号」である。
In the Togu-do of Ginkakuji,
the arrangement of tatami and columns
quietly shaped walking pace and gaze.
In the garden of Ryoanji,
the intervals between stones
suggested how time should be read.
These were not aesthetic pleasures,
but signs guiding the act of reading.
壁一枚にも、無数の層がある。
境界、距離、歴史、保護、
触れて良いものと触れてはならないもの──
こうした文化的規範までも
表層に刻まれている。
Even a single wall holds many layers—
boundary, distance, history, protection,
and cultural norms of touch
quietly embedded in its surface.
扉の高さ、床の温度、影の長さ。
それらはすべて、
人が無意識に読み取っている
「意味の文法」である。
The height of a door, the temperature of a floor,
the length of a shadow—
all form a grammar of meaning
read unconsciously.
空間を理解するとは、
物質を理解することではなく、
その文法を読み解くことである。
To understand space
is not to understand matter,
but to interpret the grammar it presents.
AI生成の時代、
表層の意味論は
いっそう複雑になっている。
AIは質感を生成できる。
だがその裏に潜む意味までは
読み取っていない。
だから人間は、AIが作り出した表層の奥にある
「まだ言葉にならない意味」を
自ら探り当てなければならない。
In the age of AI,
the semantics of surface grows more complex.
AI can generate texture,
but not the meaning within it.
Thus we must look beyond AI surfaces
to find meanings that remain unnamed.
表層は最も薄く、
そして最も深い構造である。
A surface is the thinnest
and the deepest structure.
空間は、記号であり、言語であり、詩である。
その表層は、詩が最初に声を発する場所だ。
そこに触れるだけで、
人は空間の奥行きを感じ取る。
Space is sign, language,
and also poetry.
The surface is where that poetry first gains a voice.
By touching it,
we sense the depth behind it.
空間の意味論は、表層から始まる。
そしてその表層は、
無数の時間と記憶が折り重なった
静かな地層のようなものである。
The semantics of space begins on the surface.
And that surface is never thin.
It is a quiet stratum
built from layered time and memory.
